Poundland: A Novel ¡¡ ¡¡
About the Author:Rodney Munch is a mysterious, shadowy figure with a dark and uncertain past. A book was released several years ago called Who is Rodney Munch? but little is known about him (or her). However, two facts are known about Munch: 1) He is an artist; and 2) He is a public menace. Munch's name became known following an art exhibition in his native Dundee, when dozens of random paintings began appearing with his name attached. Munch was apprehended and removed from the property, but several of his paintings remained undetected for months. Now, however, Munch is back after an unexplained absence, with his 'novel', Poundland. Synopsis:Poundland: A Novel is the story of one man¡¯s destruction at the hands of an irresponsible, faceless single-price retailer. Set in a poverty-ridden world of minimum wage jobs and endless drug-addiction, Poundland brings together lost and confused souls, mercilessly attacked by their environment. Jack is a young university graduate, waiting for the plane that will take him to a better in life in California. But before he leaves the country, he must endure a few more weeks of his Dundee life. A race begins to avoid self-destruction before escape, with the horrors of Poundland life pushing him into darker and darker places. Poundland takes place over several days of agonising work and documents Jack¡¯s decent into a dark world of drug abuse and self-loathing. Each day is more painful than the last and Jack spirals towards madness and suicide with only the hope of a better life upon emigration. More About the Book:This isn't the sort of book most people would dare to write, and it's certainly not the sort of book that most publishers would dare to take on. What Munch charges is that Poundland the company is an inherently evil and almost faceless organisation, run by sadistic morons. Worse, the staff are dimwitted and racist, and the customers are a mob of degenerate swine... As a result, the protagonist, Jack, is pushed to the brink of his sanity and to the edges of society. Excerpts can be viewed here.Controversy:Understandably, there has been a little bit of a fuss surrounding the forthcoming release of this magnificent book. Lives will be turned upside-down, a company mired in slander, and Dundee will become even more of a hotbed of violent tension. The fact is that while Munch and City of Recovery Press believe this book must be released, Poundland and their bigoted employees wish it to remain hidden from the world. As such, Munch has apparently suffered in his attempts to release the book. Most publishers will not touch it without significant name-changing and legalese, for fear of being sued. Simple attempts to raise awareness for the novel have been thwarted by former Poundland employees, who do not want their wicked ways exposed to the public. Munch has received warnings and has had two promotional MySpace page deleted at the request of an 'anonymous' source. After City of Recovery Press launched this website, but before any attempt was made to make it publicly known, it was immediately the subject of repeated attacks. Every day the website was mysteriously shut down, and every day it was re-launched. On the 7th of May, 2009, a tracking code was installed in the html that monitored visitors to the site, and recorded the IP addresses active each time the site crashed. Over the course of several hours on the 7th of May, a number of visitors browsed the City of Recovery Press website, having discovered it through blogs made known by the Poundland: The 'Novel' promotional MySpace pages that had been deleted. Three of the visiting IP addresses were logged as from bt.poundland.co.uk and coincided with yet another period of downtime for the website. Webmasters captured a screenshot of the tracking information that proves Poundland has been spying on a former employee, and strongly suggests that they've been engaging in cyber-criminal activity.Another screenshot, taken on the 20th of May, and another taken on the 21st, show that Poundland is still actively spying on Rodney Munch and City of Recovery Press. A fourth from the 22nd, a fifth on the and a fifth on the 27th show that Poundland are still worried about what people might learn through the release of this book. A sixth on the 28th shows that Poundland are not only spying on the City of Recovery website, but are watching Rodney Munch's activities through the blogosphere and on Twitter. A seventh from the 23rd of June proves that although Poundland are busy making money from the suffering of others, they aren't too busy to spy on their former employees... More... 15th July.Of course, this website is in the public domain. It's the right and privilege of any individual or organisation to view it. However, one must wonder what interests Poundland so much... They have ceased crashing our website, but they are still watching us with interest, waiting for our next move. Contact:Support Rodney Munch in his fight against Poundland, or send him fan mail or hate mail, through the following wonders of the internet age... Release:But the end is near for this unpublished tale. City of Recovery Press will fight for its release, regardless of the cost. Poundland will have to face up to their charges. The scheduled release day for publication is some time in February, 2010. ¡¡ |
